Seat types generally fall into standard (free, randomly assigned), preferred (front rows or aisle/window, a small fee), exit row / extra legroom (popular for the space but priced higher), and Premium Economy. For legs, a nonstop one-way is 1 leg and a nonstop round trip is 2 legs — each connection adds another leg, so a round trip with one connection each way comes out to 4 legs.
Paying the exit row fee doesn't guarantee the seat, either — airlines require passengers there to meet age and physical ability requirements for helping in an emergency evacuation, and can reassign the seat at check-in if those aren't met. Check the fare rules before you book.
