US Prescription Validity by Type
- Non-controlled (standard): Valid for 12 months — unlimited refills as written
- Schedule III–V: Valid 6 months — up to 5 refills
- Schedule II: Valid 6 months — no refills allowed (new Rx required each time)
- State laws may impose shorter validity periods
Frequently Asked Questions
Schedule II includes drugs with high potential for dependence such as opioids (oxycodone, hydrocodone), stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin), and some sleep medications. These require a new written or electronic prescription each time — no refills are permitted.
For non-controlled prescriptions, your doctor can issue a replacement. For Schedule II controlled substances, the original must typically be presented. Contact your prescribing physician as soon as possible if you lose a prescription.
