US Prenatal Care Schedule

Prenatal care in the US typically involves visits every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks from 28-36 weeks, and then weekly from 36 weeks until delivery. This calculator estimates the dates of key screening tests and appointments based on your LMP.

Dates are approximate. Your OB or midwife will schedule tests based on your specific situation, risk factors, and health history. Always follow your provider's guidance over general estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first trimester screening?

First trimester screening typically combines a nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound and blood tests (PAPP-A, hCG) between 10-13 weeks. It assesses the risk of chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome. A cell-free fetal DNA (NIPT) test may be offered as an alternative or follow-up.

Is the GBS test mandatory?

Group B Strep (GBS) screening is standard in the US at 35-37 weeks. If positive, antibiotics are administered during labor to protect the baby. GBS is not harmful to healthy adults but can be dangerous for newborns.

When do prenatal visits become more frequent?

Before 28 weeks: every 4 weeks. Weeks 28-36: every 2 weeks. Week 36 to delivery: every week. High-risk pregnancies may require more frequent monitoring, sometimes including additional ultrasounds or non-stress tests (NST).
