Finding the next several Friday the 13ths

Friday the 13th comes from Western superstition, and people usually look it up because the date itself is wanted, for a film release, a promotion or the name of an event. Enter a starting date and how many occurrences you want and the dates are collected in order, with how many days away each one is and how far it sits from the one before.

How the dates are found

Starting from the month of the date you entered, each month is stepped through and the weekday of its 13th is computed, keeping only the months where it is a Friday. The weekday comes from date components in Coordinated Universal Time, so nothing shifts by a day with the reader time zone. The starting date itself is never counted, only dates after it, and the collected list also yields the average gap, the span of years covered and the year holding the most occurrences. No claim is made that the date is unlucky or calls for caution.

As of October 2026 no external table or official recommended value is used, and the origins of the superstition and any reading of fortune are not covered. Years from 1900 to 2200 are supported, with up to 24 occurrences at a time. If no such date falls after the starting date and before the end of 2200, that is reported.

Frequently asked questions

How many Friday the 13ths fall in one year?

The structure of the calendar means every year has at least one and never more than three. Listing several occurrences shows how they bunch up, and the gap column makes the pattern visible.

If the starting date is itself a Friday the 13th, is it counted?

No. Only dates after the starting date are collected, so when the starting date is a Friday the 13th the list begins with the following one.

Why do the gaps jump between 28 days and over a year?

Whether the 13th is a Friday depends on the weekday of the 1st of that month, and months run from 28 to 31 days. Two in the same year can sit 28 or 35 days apart, while a year with only one pushes the gap past 12 months.
