Find the best days off around holidays for a long weekend

How to Use the Long Weekend Leave Planner

When a holiday lands on an awkward day of the week, it's natural to wonder whether one extra PTO day could turn it into a real long weekend. This calculator takes a holiday date, figures out which day of the week it falls on, and tells you exactly how many PTO days you'd need, which day to take off, and how many total consecutive days off you'd end up with.

If the holiday is a Tuesday, taking just the Monday before it off connects Saturday through Tuesday for a 4-day break. If it's a Thursday, taking the Friday after it off does the same thing in the other direction, running Thursday through Sunday. A Wednesday holiday is the trickiest case — it takes two PTO days, but rewards you with up to 5 consecutive days off, which is actually the best return on PTO of any weekday. Holidays that fall on Monday or Friday, by contrast, already connect naturally to the weekend, so you get a 3-day break without spending any PTO at all.

When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the math works a little differently, since many employers apply an "observed" weekday off in that case — check whether your employer or the federal calendar applies an observed date before relying on this result. And since long weekends are popular, it's worth requesting your PTO day early before your team's schedule fills up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday?

If the holiday is a Tuesday, take the Monday before it off. If it's a Thursday, take the Friday after it off. Either way, one PTO day gets you a 4-day weekend.

How many PTO days do I need for a Wednesday holiday?

A Wednesday holiday doesn't connect directly to either weekend, so it takes two PTO days. Taking Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday, off gets you up to a 5-day break.
