🔗Word Chain Starter and Turn Order Picker

Turn order and starter words

You Might Also Need

This picker takes a player count and a round count, then sets up a whole game of word chain in a single pass. Every round gets its own starter word, shown with the last letter of that word and the shuffled turn order. Initial-consonant games and category word lists are not covered here. Player names are never collected; the order is written with numbers only.

The turn order comes from shuffling the numbers 1 up to the player count with a reverse Fisher-Yates pass. Starter words are drawn without repeats from the list you pick. Words ending in J, Q, V, X or Z are hard to follow, so some groups allow the second-to-last letter instead, and that fallback letter is shown alongside. When the rule does not apply the column reads Not applicable. As of October 2026 the built-in words number sixty across two lists.

The page does not check whether a word appears in a dictionary, so settle disputed calls with one yourself. The fallback letter is a house rule that varies between groups, not a standard spelling ruling. No winner is decided and nothing is tallied. The browser random source (Math.random) is not a cryptographically secure generator, so do not use it for a draw that carries legal weight or money.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a fallback letter shown?

Words ending in J, Q, V, X or Z are hard to follow, so some groups allow the second-to-last letter instead. The column shows that letter in advance, and prints Not applicable when the rule does not apply.

Does it check whether a word is in the dictionary?

It does not. Words are drawn from the built-in lists only, so check a dictionary yourself whenever a call has to be settled.

How is the turn order decided?

Numbers from 1 up to the player count are shuffled with a reverse Fisher-Yates pass. Every press reshuffles them, and no names are collected.
