How the watch genre roulette works

Some evenings the whole time goes into choosing. Instead of picking a title straight away, this narrows the field by drawing a genre first. Choose your mood, who is watching with you and how long you want to watch, and the tool keeps only the matching genres out of the 53 built in, then draws one to three of them without repeats and lists them with their group. Leave the filters on Any and the draw runs over all 53. Searching only inside the drawn genre makes the decision much faster.

The filter is plain condition matching: every genre carries mood, company and length markers, and only genres that satisfy all three remain. The draw then runs one reverse Fisher-Yates shuffle over the remaining pool and takes the first entries, so no genre repeats. It uses the browser Math.random function, which is not a cryptographically secure random source, so do not use it for an official draw that is legally binding or that involves money. The markers were assigned by the author as of October 2026.

The tool does not recommend titles. It is also not a copy of any streaming service's own genre taxonomy and it is not affiliated with any service. The list only collects genre names in common use, so the labels inside an app may differ.

Frequently asked questions

Does it recommend titles too?

No. The tool only draws genres. Title recommendations are not covered, so put the drawn genre into the search box of whatever service you use and choose inside it.

Does this match a streaming service's own genre list?

No. It is a list of 53 genre names in common use, not a copy of any service's taxonomy, and it is not affiliated with any service.

Why does it say it cannot draw with my filters?

That happens when fewer genres satisfy all three filters than the number you asked for. Set one filter back to Any or draw fewer genres.
