You Might Also Need

This generator splits a name list into random groups. You can either enter a group count and let the page divide evenly, or set each group size yourself, such as 4, 4 and 3. People who must stay together and people who must be kept apart can be listed one set per line, and the placement respects those rules.

An even split gives every group the whole part of headcount divided by group count and hands the remainder to the first groups one at a time, so group sizes differ by at most one person. Placement treats each together set as a single block, shuffles the blocks with a reverse Fisher-Yates pass, and drops each block into a group that still has room and breaks no apart rule, retrying up to 500 times. There is no published standard for an ideal group size, and none was confirmed in an authoritative source. Current as of October 2026.

This page does not handle two-person pair matching, seating charts, or balancing groups by skill or gender. If a rule line matches no name in your list, the page names that line and stops. When the same name appears twice in the list, a rule applies to the first entry only. Browser randomness is not a cryptographically secure source, so do not use it for legally binding draws or for any draw where money is at stake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make groups of different sizes such as 4, 4, 3?

Yes. Choose the custom option and type 4,4,3 with commas. If the sizes do not add up to your headcount, the page shows both numbers.

How do I write the together and apart rules?

Put one set per line with names separated by commas. A line in the together box stays in one group; a line in the apart box is split across groups.

What happens if the rules cannot be met?

The page retries up to 500 times and, if it still cannot place everyone, it shows a message instead of a result. Remove some rules or add more groups.
