How the snake draft order is built

Enter the number of teams and rounds and the tool draws the round 1 order at random, then reverses it from round 2 onward to lay out the full pick order. With three teams, round 1 runs 1-2-3, round 2 runs 3-2-1 and round 3 returns to 1-2-3. The team that picks first also picks last in the next round, so the advantage of an early slot evens out without redrawing every round. Enter team names and the table uses them; leave the box empty and the teams are numbered.

The round 1 order comes from a single reverse Fisher-Yates shuffle, and later rounds are laid out mechanically, odd rounds forward and even rounds reversed. Total picks is teams times rounds, and a second table lists which pick numbers each team holds. Up to 20 teams and 20 rounds are handled. It uses the browser Math.random function, which is not a cryptographically secure random source, so do not use it for an official draw that is legally binding or that involves money.

Only the snake pattern is built here. Reverse-standings order, weighted lottery odds, traded picks and formats that redraw the order each round are not covered, and neither is plain order assignment for a group of people. If your league rules set a different format, follow the rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is a snake draft?

The round 1 order is set, round 2 runs it backwards and round 3 flips it forward again. With three teams it goes 1-2-3, 3-2-1, 1-2-3, so the benefit of an early pick alternates instead of piling up.

Does it redraw the order every round?

No. Only round 1 is drawn at random; after that the order alternates forward and reversed. Redrawing each round, reverse-standings order and weighted lottery odds are not covered.

Do I have to enter team names?

No. Leave the box empty and the teams are numbered from Team 1. If you do enter names, the count must match the number of teams, and a message appears when it does not.
