A safe indoor temperature is not one number

Inside one home the window, the floor and head height all read differently. This calculator takes the indoor temperature measured where your pet actually rests and compares it with the range your veterinarian or product documentation gave you, reporting whether it falls inside and by how many degrees it misses. Add the thermostat setting and the gap between the setting and the real reading is reported too.

No published table of target indoor temperatures by species or breed could be verified. At the same air temperature a flat-faced breed, a long-coated breed, a senior, an overweight pet or one with heart or airway disease all respond differently, so this page offers no temperature of its own and uses only the range you enter. The reading and the range are compared at one decimal, so the numbers and the conclusion never disagree. Current as of October 2026.

Taking a body temperature and judging heatstroke are both outside this page. Put cooling mats and fans where your pet can walk away from them, and never leave a pet shut in a space that heats fast, such as a parked car. Panting that will not settle, red gums and an unsteady gait are an emergency whatever the room reads. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why no recommended temperature?

No published table of target indoor temperatures by species or breed could be verified. Naming a wrong one could get an animal hurt, so the range is yours to enter.

Where should I measure?

At floor level where your pet actually lies, not at chest height. Within one room the floor and the ceiling can be far apart.

Inside the range means fine, right?

It only means your reading matched the numbers you entered. A sunlit spot or a corner with no airflow runs hotter, so measure those spots separately.
