How to use the pet summer cooling checklist

Enter the temperature right now, the caution point you use, the coat type, and tick the items that apply. The tool counts how many things are worth preparing for summer heat, which helps before you buy another cooling mat or shift walk times.

Seven items make up the tally: whether the temperature is above the point you entered, whether the coat is long or double, and five checkboxes covering a short muzzle, age, weight, outdoor living and cooling in the home. No authoritative caution temperature or coat grading for pets was found, so the caution point is yours to enter. Compiled as of October 2026.

The item count is a tally of preparations, not a measure of heat illness risk, and the tool issues no grade or score. It does not compare cooling products either. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if panting will not settle or your pet is drooling heavily and going limp.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no breed selector?

No authoritative source grades heat sensitivity by breed. So the tool asks for things you can observe instead, such as coat type and whether the muzzle is short.

What should I enter as my caution point?

There is no authoritative caution temperature for pets, so no default is filled in. Use a figure from your veterinarian, or the temperature at which your own pet starts panting, and the comparison runs against that.

Does a high item count mean danger?

No. The count is a tally of things to prepare, not a measure of risk. If panting will not settle or drooling is heavy, call your veterinarian regardless of the number.
