How to Use the Dog Shedding Observation Log Calculator

No recognized chart grades how much each dog breed sheds. Within a single breed the amount varies with the individual and the season, which is why grading is unreliable. This tool therefore drops breed lists and grades entirely. You choose a coat type of short, long or double, and the counts you recorded yourself are converted into rates.

Against the days observed, the tool reports the share of days you noticed hair clumps and the share of days hair stuck to clothes or furniture, then divides cleaning uses into a daily average. The final line counts only how many entries were above zero plus the seasonal coat change box. No arbitrary cut point for heavy shedding is applied. Hair loss caused by skin disease needs an exam, and the coat and body condition wording here follows the terms used by WSAVA and AAHA. Figures current as of October 2026.

The tool assigns no shedding grade and supplies no per-breed reference value. It cannot tell whether a skin condition is present. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pick a breed and get a shedding grade?

No. There is no recognized grading chart per breed, so no grade is produced. Only the coat type and the counts you recorded are converted into rates.

Does a high rate mean skin disease?

It does not. If hair comes out in clumps or bare skin appears, that needs an exam regardless of what the rate says.

How does the seasonal coat change box affect the result?

It adds one to the observed item count and nothing else. It never raises or lowers the calculated rates.
