Packing a trip with the quantities worked out
Enter the trip length, how many pets are coming, the daily food per pet and the daily pee pads. The tool adds your spare days and returns the total food and the total number of pads. Checking the items below also shows how many are packed and which ones are still missing. If you do not use pads, enter 0 and the result says it was entered as none used.
Total food is the trip length plus the spare days, multiplied by the number of pets and the daily amount. Pads are worked out the same way and rounded up only once, at the end. The basis used is shown in the result as pet-days. The item list covers what the AVMA and the ASPCA both raise in their guidance on traveling with pets. Current as of October 2026.
Rules for transport and lodging differ by company, so this tool does not check them for you. Switching food at the destination often causes diarrhea, so bringing the usual food is the safer choice. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.
Frequently asked questions
No official standard sets the number of spare days. Think about how late the return trip could run and enter that figure in the spare days box; the tool adds it to the total.
It only asks whether you packed medication prescribed by your veterinarian along with its instructions. Only a veterinarian sets the drug and the dose, so this tool never suggests an amount.
Use a carrier or a car seat that stays anchored, and never leave a pet alone in the car on a warm day, even briefly. The inside temperature climbs fast even with a window open.
