Review gum color and refill time together

If gum color looks different from usual and you also see weakness, fast breathing or collapse, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital right now. This tool only organizes what you observed and does not make the emergency call for you.

Color and refill time, read together

Pick the gum color, enter the seconds it takes for color to return after you press the gum lightly and let go, and select any other signs you can see. The tool lays out what the color is linked to, how the refill time compares with the known range, and how many other signs are present, and it builds the color reference table from the same values.

The basis and its limits

Normal gums are moist and bubblegum pink, and color returns within 1 to 2 seconds after pressing. Over 2 seconds suggests circulation is not moving well. Pale or white is linked to bleeding, anemia or shock, blue or purple to a lack of oxygen, brick red to overheating, sepsis or toxicity, and yellow to a liver problem or jaundice. These are the observations used in common by pet first aid guidance from animal welfare organizations such as the ASPCA, and no validated scale turns color into a score. Information here is current as of October 2026.

Pets with heavily pigmented gums are hard to read this way, and lighting changes how color appears. No score, grade or confirmed diagnosis is given. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the refill time?

Lift the upper lip, press the gum with a finger for about a second, release, and count until the blanched spot matches the color around it. One to two seconds is the normal range.

What if the gums are too pigmented to read?

Look at a less pigmented spot such as inside the lip or the eye membrane. If you still cannot tell, choose Not sure and make contact right away.

If nothing falls outside the range, is my pet well?

This is not a substitute for an exam. Color shifts with lighting and angle, so contact your veterinarian as soon as anything looks different from usual.
