How to use the pet-friendly stay rules checker

Booking a room because the listing says pet friendly is how people end up arguing at the front desk. Properties cap the number of pets, the weight of each pet and sometimes the combined weight, and they add a fee on top. Enter your own party, then the numbers written in the pet policy of the property you are booking, and this checker lays out each item side by side with how far over you are.

Each check is a plain comparison: pets against the per-room cap, the heaviest pet against the per-pet cap, and the combined weight against the combined cap, with equal values counted as within the rule. Entering 0 for the combined cap shows no limit. The fee total is fee per pet per night multiplied by pets and nights. No common standard exists for pet policies, so every threshold here is an input. For a trip with overnight stays, checking your pet health with a veterinarian beforehand is the usual travel advice from groups such as the AVMA and AAHA. Current as of October 2026.

This tool does not search or recommend properties and does not handle deposits, cleaning charges or breed restrictions. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a standard pet policy across hotels?

No. The number of pets allowed, the weight cap and the fee are set property by property and even room type by room type, so this checker asks you for them instead of assuming.

What if we are only slightly over the weight cap?

Some properties make exceptions depending on room type or season. If the check comes back over, confirm it with the property before you book rather than hoping at check-in.

How is the pet fee total worked out?

Fee per pet per night multiplied by the number of pets and the number of nights. Deposits and cleaning charges are not included, so read the policy for those as well.
