How to use the Bird Out-of-Cage Time Calculator

Out-of-cage time usually happens in snatched stretches rather than one long block, which makes it hard to say at the end of the day how much the bird actually got. Set the daily target you have decided on, list today's sessions one per line in minutes, and this calculator reports the number of sessions, the total, the share of the target reached and how much is still to go. The longest session is shown too, so you can see how the day was spread.

The method is a plain sum of the sessions divided by the target. When the total equals the target exactly, the share reads 100.0%, the remainder reads zero minutes and the day counts as reached. If the total runs past the target, the remainder still shows as zero rather than a negative figure. The formula used is printed with the result.

No default target is pre-filled. As of October 2026, no veterinary body such as AAHA or WSAVA publishes a recommended daily out-of-cage time by bird species. The right amount shifts entirely with species, age, cage size and the layout of the home, so planting a figure here would make it read like a recognized standard. Set the target from your species care source or with your veterinarian. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care.

Frequently asked questions

What target should I enter?

The tool suggests none, because no recognized time table exists. Use a figure from the care source for your species or agreed with your veterinarian, and the smaller the cage, the more generous that target should be.

Can I split the day into several entries?

Splitting is exactly what this is for. A morning stretch and an evening one go on separate lines and both feed into the total and the percentage. Blank lines are ignored, so there is no need to tidy them up.

Is going past 100% a problem?

It simply means the target was exceeded; it is not a warning. Accidents during free flight happen in seconds, though, so when extending time, clear hazards such as open windows, hot cookware and other pets first.
