🧊Pet Arthritis Observation Log

Item count today and the change since your last record

Arthritis stage is assigned by a veterinarian with tools such as COAST alongside an exam, not from owner observation alone. This tool therefore assigns no stage; it counts how many observations apply today and compares that with your last record.

Animals with sore joints rarely look like they are in pain. They change how they live instead, skipping stairs or asking to turn back early on a walk. This tool counts how many of eight such changes apply today, then compares that with the number you wrote down last time and shows whether it went up or down and how many days apart the two records are.

It produces no stage. Staging is done by a veterinarian with COAST (Canine OsteoArthritis Staging Tool) alongside an exam, while LOAD and the CBPI are validated owner-completed questionnaires that produce a score rather than a stage. The same item also reads differently depending on weight, age, floor surface and weather. For the same reason no score and no pain level are calculated, only the count and the change. Counting the same items every 2 to 4 weeks makes a trend easy to read. Figures are as of October 2026.

Zero items does not mean the joints are fine, because pain is often hidden. Supplements, medication and rehabilitation plans are out of scope here. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many items count as severe?

No accepted table turns a count into a severity, so this tool does not produce one. Counting the same items again and watching the change is more useful.

How often should I count again?

Every 2 to 4 weeks with the same items makes a trend easy to see. Agree the interval with your veterinarian based on the condition and any medication.

If nothing is checked, are the joints fine?

No. Pain is often hidden, so zero items does not mean normal. Agree a check up interval with your veterinarian.
