Range and midrange, with the position and count of each extreme

How to use the max, min and range calculator

Paste a list of numbers and the calculator returns the largest value, the smallest value and the range between them. The range is the simplest measure of spread there is, just the maximum minus the minimum, and it comes with the midrange, the point exactly halfway between the two extremes.

Rather than printing two bare numbers, it also reports where each extreme first appears in your list, how many times it occurs and how many distinct values the list holds. In data with plenty of repeats it matters whether the maximum is a lone outlier or a value that shows up again and again. When there are at least three distinct values the second largest and second smallest appear as well, which makes it obvious when a single stray reading has inflated the range.

With only one value the maximum equals the minimum and the range is zero. That is a legitimate answer rather than an error, so it is labelled as such. If no numbers are found at all, or something in the list cannot be read as a number, the offending text is quoted back. Equality between values is judged with a small tolerance so decimal noise does not split identical numbers apart.

Frequently asked questions

How is the range calculated?

It is the maximum minus the minimum. That makes it the simplest measure of spread, but also the one most easily thrown off by a single extreme value.

Is a single value an error?

No. The maximum equals the minimum, the range is zero and the midrange is that same value. It is treated as a valid result.

Is the midrange the same as the median?

No. The midrange is the average of the maximum and the minimum, while the median is the middle value once the data is sorted.
