How to use the social engagement rate calculator

Engagement rate divides the reactions a post earned by a base audience. The catch is that the denominator differs by platform. Instagram Insights reports both a follower-based and a reach-based figure, while ad platforms report against impressions. When reach is smaller than your follower count, the reach-based rate comes out much higher, so the two numbers are not comparable. This calculator makes you pick the denominator explicitly and prints that choice in the result label.

The numerator is entered as separate counts for likes, comments, saves and shares. The share-of-total table shows whether a post only collects likes or actually earns saves and shares. Leave a field blank to exclude it from the total.

Average engagement rates vary widely by industry, account size and post format, so no benchmark is stated here. Enter your own target rate instead and the calculator reports the gap in percentage points against that target. Using the average of your own recent posts is the most realistic comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use followers or reach as the denominator?

Pick the one that matches your reporting, then stay with it. Followers show reactions relative to account size, reach shows reactions relative to the people who actually saw the post.

Do saves and shares count as engagement?

It depends on the platform and your own reporting policy. This calculator sums the four fields you enter, so leaving one blank simply excludes it.
