How to use the bounce rate calculator

Bounce rate here is single-page sessions รท total sessions: the share of visits where someone landed, viewed one page and never moved on. It is a first-impression metric for a site or an acquisition channel. Exit rate is a different denominator and is often confused with it: of all sessions that viewed a given page, the share that ended there. A page can have a low bounce rate and a high exit rate at the same time, because exits include people who arrived through several earlier pages.

GA4 redefined bounce rate as the inverse of engagement rate โ€” the share of sessions that failed to meet an engagement condition (10 seconds or more, two or more pageviews, or a conversion event). Those numbers are not directly comparable to the old Universal Analytics single-page figure, so check which definition produced the value you are working with.

Normal ranges swing widely by industry, device and traffic source, so no "good below X%" threshold is built in. Enter your own target and you get the gap in percentage points plus how many single-page sessions would have to disappear to reach it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a high bounce rate always bad?

No. A page that answers the whole question โ€” hours, a phone number, a definition โ€” has done its job even when nearly every session ends there. It is a problem when the visit was supposed to continue to a product or checkout page.

Should I look at bounce rate or exit rate?

Bounce rate suits landing performance; exit rate suits finding where people drop out mid-funnel. This calculator computes only the single-page bounce rate, not exit rate.
