How the rug size is produced
Draw one rectangle around the furniture that will sit on the rug, measure its width and length, and add your own margin on all four sides. The margin is entered once per side, so it counts twice across the width and twice along the length. The page also reports the rug area, its share of the room, and how much bare floor is left beyond each edge.
No rug sizing rule is published here. Figures of the form "so many inches larger than the sofa" circulate widely, but they are habit rather than standard. Written as of October 2026.
This tool handles dimensions and area only. Material, pile, slip resistance, pricing and whether a layout looks right are out of scope. If the rug would exceed the room, the overrun is reported and the calculation stops.
Frequently Asked Questions
No rug sizing rule is published here. Widely quoted figures exist, but they are habit rather than standard. Enter the margin you want and the size is derived from that value alone.
Draw one rectangle around whatever will sit on the rug and enter its width and length. If only the front legs will be on the rug, measure the area those legs cover.
It is blocked with a message that reports how far it overruns across and deep. Reduce the margin or re-measure the footprint and the calculation resumes.
