Plan Your Child's Study Room Layout Before You Buy
Fitting a desk, bed, and bookshelf into a child's room requires careful planning. This calculator shows you the total furniture footprint, remaining floor space, and space utilization rate — so you can decide if the layout will work before purchasing or rearranging furniture. Avoid costly mistakes by planning digitally first.
Aim for a furniture footprint under 50% of the room area for a comfortable, open environment. A 10×11 ft (110 sq ft) room with typical study furniture takes up about 36–40 sq ft (33–36% utilization), leaving generous space for movement. If you're above 70%, consider a loft bed with a desk underneath, wall-mounted shelving, or a fold-down desk to free up floor space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Place the desk with natural light coming from the side — left for right-handed, right for left-handed children. Avoid facing directly toward or away from windows to prevent glare and visual distractions.
Loft beds with under-desk workspace are ideal for small rooms. Wall-mounted shelves replace floor-standing bookshelves. A fold-down or corner desk also saves significant floor space without sacrificing function.
Allow at least 24 inches (2 ft) of walking clearance between the bed and desk. The desk chair needs 3 feet of clearance behind it when fully pulled out. Doorways need 36 inches of clear swing space.
