How to use the gym membership refund calculator

The United States has no national refund schedule for health clubs. Unlike countries that publish one industry-wide table, refunds here are set by the agreement you signed, so this calculator asks for your own contract terms: the price, the length of the term, the days you have already used, and the cancellation fee the contract names.

Legal basis: most states do regulate health clubs directly. Typical statutes give a buyer roughly three to five days to cancel after signing and allow termination if the club closes, if you move beyond a set distance, or if illness or disability prevents use. California Civil Code section 1812.80 and following and New York General Business Law section 620 and following are widely cited examples, and prepayment limits often apply too. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule at 16 C.F.R. Part 429 gives three business days for sales made away from the seller's place of business, which usually does not cover a contract signed at the gym. Figures current as of September 2026.

Enter the days since you signed to see whether the statutory window may still be open. Outside that window the estimate prorates the unused portion and subtracts the fee your contract states. State rules vary a great deal, so treat every prefilled value as editable and check your own state.

This calculator is for reference only and is not legal advice. Consult a licensed attorney about your specific situation, and consider contacting your state attorney general's consumer protection office if a club refuses a refund the statute appears to require.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a federal gym refund rule in the United States?

No. There is no national refund schedule for health clubs. Refunds follow your signed agreement, and most states add a health club statute with a short cancellation window and special termination rights.

When can I cancel a gym contract without paying a fee?

Many state health club laws allow cancellation within roughly three to five days of signing, and also on death, disability, relocation beyond a set distance, or if the club closes. California Civil Code 1812.80 and New York General Business Law 620 are examples.

Does the FTC Cooling-Off Rule cover a gym I joined at the club?

Usually not. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule at 16 C.F.R. Part 429 covers sales made away from the seller's normal place of business, so a contract signed inside the gym generally falls outside it.
