How to use the valve actuator torque calculator
Before you automate a quarter-turn valve with an electric or pneumatic actuator, you need its break torque. Undersize the actuator and the valve will not open against line pressure; oversize it and you pay for a larger unit, a heavier mounting bracket and a bigger air supply than the job needs.
This tool models the differential pressure acting across the bore area, which presses the ball or disc against the downstream seat. Seat friction torque is μ × ΔP × πd³ ÷ 8, giving lb-in that is converted to lb-ft. A stem and packing allowance is added to obtain break torque, and a safety factor is applied to give the required actuator output torque.
Treat the result as a preliminary sizing estimate. Actual break torque depends on seat interference, ball surface finish, service temperature and the fluid itself, so confirm the final selection against the manufacturer torque data sheet. For pneumatic actuators, check the output torque at the lowest expected supply air pressure, not the nominal value.
Frequently asked questions
Use the maximum pressure difference that can exist across the closed valve. That is normally the upstream design pressure minus the downstream pressure; if the downstream side vents to atmosphere, enter the upstream gauge pressure.
On/off service with a clean fluid usually uses 1.25, and general process service 1.5. Slurry lines or valves that sit idle for long periods and may stick are commonly sized at 2.0.
