The arithmetic is simple division, but the answer lives or dies on what you put in the denominator.
Net available time means only the minutes the line can genuinely run. Subtract breaks, shift meetings, cleaning, and planned maintenance, then multiply by the number of shifts. Skip that step and takt time comes out generous, which quietly guarantees the schedule slips later.
Remember that takt time is a requirement, not a capability. If measured cycle time exceeds takt time you need overtime, another operator, or a rebalanced line. If it is far below takt time you are building inventory nobody ordered. Setting the target cycle time at roughly 85 to 90 percent of takt time leaves room for the stoppages every real line has.
For seasonal products, recalculate takt time monthly and adjust staffing and shift patterns with it rather than leaving one number in place all year.
