How to Use the Rebar Spacing Calculator
When bars are placed in a beam or column, they need enough clear space between them for concrete to flow freely and consolidate around each bar. This calculator takes member width, clear cover, stirrup diameter, and main bar size/count, then returns the clear spacing between bars and the center-to-center spacing.
It first finds the effective width by subtracting cover and stirrup diameter from both sides of the member width, then subtracts the combined diameter of all the main bars from that effective width and divides by (bar count - 1) to get clear spacing. Center-to-center spacing is that clear spacing plus one bar diameter. Per ACI 318 25.2.1, clear spacing must be at least the bar diameter or 1 inch, whichever is larger — the result flags it if your inputs fall short.
If the result comes in under the minimum, consider fewer, larger-diameter bars, or widen the member itself. Inadequate spacing can block coarse aggregate from passing between bars during the pour, causing honeycombing or voids.
