How to use the rebar concrete cover calculator

Concrete cover is the shortest distance from the concrete surface to the outermost reinforcement, and it is what protects the steel from chlorides, carbonation, and fire. Choose the exposure condition, member type, and bar size to see the minimum specified cover required for cast-in-place nonprestressed members, then compare it with the cover shown on your drawings.

The values follow ACI 318 Table 20.5.1.3.1. Concrete cast against and permanently in contact with ground needs 3 in. Concrete exposed to weather or in contact with ground needs 2 in. for No. 6 through No. 18 bars and 1.5 in. for No. 5 bars and smaller. For members not exposed to weather, slabs, joists, and walls need 1.5 in. for No. 14 and No. 18 bars and 0.75 in. for No. 11 and smaller, while beams, columns, pedestals, and tension ties need 1.5 in.

Remember that cover is a placement result, not just a drawing note. Chair spacing, bar sag between supports, and formwork deflection all reduce actual cover, so verify it during rebar inspection. ACI 117 permits a minus 3/8 in. tolerance for members 8 in. deep or less and minus 1/2 in. for deeper members, but never more than a one third reduction of the specified value.

Corrosive environments, marine exposure, and fire rating requirements can all demand more cover than the table minimum, and precast or prestressed members follow separate tables. Treat this as a preliminary check, follow the contract drawings and specifications, and have the engineer of record confirm the final cover before fabrication.
