Projecting industrial waste with a waste factor
Sizing a waste contract or a storage area needs a defensible projection, not last year's invoice. The usual approach is the waste factor method: generation equals production multiplied by a factor expressed as pounds of waste per unit produced. Divide last year's total manifested tonnage by the same period's output and you have a factor that reflects your own process rather than an industry average.
Run 10,000 units a year at 5 lb per unit and you generate 50,000 lb, or 25 short tons. A 10 % hazardous share splits that into 2.5 tons of hazardous and 22.5 tons of non-hazardous waste, and a 60 % recycling rate leaves 15 tons recycled and 10 tons going to disposal.
The hazardous share drives your regulatory status, because RCRA sets generator categories by how many kilograms of hazardous waste you produce in a calendar month under 40 CFR 262.13.

Category drives accumulation time limits, manifesting, training and contingency planning, and acute hazardous waste has far tighter thresholds of its own. Many states run authorized programs that are stricter than the federal floor.
