How grinding wheel surface speed is calculated
Wheel surface speed depends only on the wheel diameter and the spindle rpm. In US shop units the formula is SFPM = ฯ ร D(in) ร RPM รท 12, where SFPM is surface feet per minute. As a wheel wears down, its diameter drops and so does its surface speed, which is why an old wheel often feels slower and burns more than a fresh one at the same rpm.
Speed is also a safety limit. Every wheel is marked with a maximum operating speed, and exceeding it can burst the wheel. The values in the list (5,500 SFPM for vitrified Type 1 wheels, 6,500 SFPM for organic bonds, up to 16,000 SFPM for cut-off wheels) are typical ANSI B7.1 figures for reference only โ always follow the speed marked on the wheel itself and the machine nameplate.
For process settings, softer materials and rough stock removal usually favor lower speeds, while hard materials and fine finishing favor higher speeds. Raising the speed also raises heat and the risk of grinding burn, so adjust coolant flow and feed rate together. Have a safety officer or the machine builder review any change to a higher-speed setup before running it.
