How to count fire dampers for a project
Where a duct passes through a fire-resistance rated wall, floor or shaft enclosure, IBC Chapter 7 and NFPA 90A require a listed damper that closes on heat or smoke detection. Quantity comes out of the compartment layout, not the duct length, so the order matters: divide the floor plate into compartments, count the barrier lines between them, then count the horizontal mains that cross those lines and the vertical risers that pass through each floor.
Because the allowable fire area in the US depends on occupancy group, construction type and sprinkler protection under IBC Table 506.2, the maximum compartment area is left as an input rather than fixed. Damper rating follows IBC 717: assemblies rated under 3 hours take a 1.5-hour damper, and 3-hour or greater assemblies take a 3-hour damper, both listed to UL 555. Smoke dampers in smoke barriers are listed to UL 555S and are counted separately.
The default 22,500 ft² smoke compartment limit reflects the Group I-2 requirement in IBC 407.5; other occupancies use different limits or none at all, so change the value for your project. Access doors, detector location and sleeve details all affect installed cost, so confirm the final count and details with the mechanical engineer of record and the AHJ.
