How to Use the Distribution Panel Circuit Calculator

Getting branch circuit count wrong at the panel design stage means either running out of room later or installing an oversized panel you didn't need. This calculator takes total load, service voltage, and branch breaker rating and works out how many branch circuits you need, following NEC (National Electrical Code) design practice.

First, load (kW) is divided by voltage to get total load current — single-phase uses I = P / V, three-phase uses I = P / (√3 x V). Then the breaker rating is multiplied by a derate factor (typically 80%) to get the usable current per branch circuit.

NEC 210.20(A) requires that continuous loads (running 3 hours or longer) not exceed 80% of a breaker's rating, since running a breaker at full rating continuously risks nuisance tripping from heat buildup. Dividing total load current by that per-circuit allowable current and rounding up gives the minimum number of branch circuits required.

This is a bare-minimum count based on total capacity alone. Real panel schedules also need to account for dedicated circuits required for specific load types, spare circuit capacity for future additions, and available panel space — so have a licensed electrician or electrical engineer review the final panel design.
