How to size diffuser count

Diffuser quantity is simply the required airflow divided by what one outlet can deliver quietly. This tool takes floor area and ceiling height to get room volume, applies your air change rate as CFM = volume x ACH / 60, and then returns the diffuser count, the airflow each one ends up carrying, and a suggested spacing.

Air change rates vary by use: offices typically run 5 to 8 ACH, conference rooms and dining areas 8 to 12, and kitchens or high-occupancy spaces 15 or more. For airflow per outlet, most ceiling diffusers in commercial work are loaded at roughly 150 to 400 CFM each; larger louvered or linear slot units handle more, but noise climbs quickly once you push past the catalog range.

Counts always round up, which this calculator does for you. Once the count is set, take the square root of the area each diffuser serves to get an even spacing on the ceiling grid. Spacing that is too wide leaves stagnant zones because the throw cannot reach the middle of the room, while dumping the whole airflow into one or two outlets raises velocity, noise, and drafts at desk level. Check each candidate against the manufacturer throw, NC rating, and pressure drop data before locking the layout.
