A steel column in compression can fail by buckling sideways long before the material yields, and slenderness is what decides which failure mode comes first. Enter the unbraced length, the end condition, the radius of gyration, and the steel grade to get KL/r, the AISC 360 transition limit, the elastic buckling stress, and which buckling zone the member falls into.
Slenderness is the effective length KL divided by the radius of gyration r. The effective length factor comes from end restraint, and AISC Commentary Table C-A-7.1 recommends 0.65 for fixed-fixed, 0.80 for fixed-pinned, 1.0 for pinned-pinned, 1.2 for fixed ends with sway, and 2.1 for a fixed base with a free top. Always use the weak axis radius of gyration for a conservative check.
