How to use the CNC machining time calculator

The first number a quote needs is the time the cutter is actually engaged. Enter the cutting length, the feed rate and the number of passes and the cutting time for one part appears in hours, minutes and seconds, together with the total for the quantity and the same total in minutes.

The relation applied is cutting time = length x passes / feed rate. Length goes in inches and feed rate in inches per minute (IPM), so the result comes out in minutes and is multiplied by 60 before being shown as h:mm:ss. Rounding happens once, at the second, so no minute or second field ever shows 60. Passes and quantity accept whole numbers only and a decimal entry raises a notice. The formula line also shows the total cutting distance in feet with meters in parentheses. Values are as of October 2026.

Non-cutting time such as tool changes, rapid moves and load and unload, approach and overrun allowances, and parts per hour are not covered. Suggested feed rates by material were not confirmed in an authoritative source either, so none are given and you enter the values from the tool data sheet and the part program. This calculator is for reference and does not replace design; confirm the real cycle time against the machine rating and the program.

Frequently asked questions

Why is tool change time left out?

Non-cutting time such as tool changes, rapid moves and load and unload is not covered. This page is the quick version that shows only the time actually spent cutting at the feed rate.

What goes in the pass count?

The number of times the same path is traveled. If the depth is split into several cuts, that number of cuts is the pass count.

Does it show parts per hour?

Parts per hour and cycle time per part are not covered. The results stop at the cutting time for one part and that time multiplied by the quantity.
