How to Use the String Art Thread Calculator

String art uses a circular or polygon board studded with nails, connected with thread to form gradients and patterns. Nail spacing that's too wide makes the design look coarse, while spacing that's too tight causes nails to collide. Enter your board diameter and nail count to get the exact spacing between nails, then add your design's total number of lines (connections) to estimate the total thread you'll need.

Nail spacing is calculated from the board's circumference (diameter × π) divided by the nail count. Thread length is estimated by multiplying the average chord length across the board by the total number of lines, with a 10% buffer automatically added to cover knots and thread lost at the start and end of the project.

Actual usage can vary with your design pattern (gradient, portrait-style, geometric, etc.), so treat this result as a solid ballpark for how much thread to buy. Getting extra up front saves you a mid-project trip back to the craft store.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra thread should I buy?

Knots and start/end trimming waste some thread, so plan for 10-15% more than the calculated total. This calculator automatically adds a 10% buffer to the result.

Does adding more nails require more thread?

More nails means tighter spacing between them, but for the same number of design lines, total thread needed stays roughly the same. Thread usage rises mainly when you add more lines for a denser design.
