How to Use the Hydroponic LED PPFD Calculator

Lighting is the most commonly overlooked factor in indoor hydroponic growing. A grow space can look bright to the eye while still falling short of the light plants actually need for photosynthesis. This calculator uses the recommended PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) for your crop type, then combines it with your grow area and LED efficacy (PPE, umol/J) to calculate the total LED wattage you need.

Light requirements vary a lot by crop. Leafy greens like lettuce grow well at relatively low light levels (around 200 umol/m2/s), while fruiting crops like tomatoes and peppers need strong light near 750 umol/m2/s during fruiting. Herbs and flowering plants fall somewhere in between. Too little light leads to leggy, slow growth, while too much can cause light stress.

LED efficacy (PPE) is listed on the product spec sheet — standard grow LEDs run 1.8-2.2 umol/J, while high-efficiency fixtures reach 2.5-3.0 umol/J. The wattage figure assumes light is distributed evenly across the whole grow area, so in practice it's safer to add a 10-20% buffer depending on your fixture layout and whether you're using reflective material.
