Hitting your target bitterness (IBU) in a homebrew depends on knowing how much hops to add. This calculator takes your batch volume, target IBU, the alpha acid % of the hops you're using, and the boil time for that addition, then estimates the hop weight you need.

When hops hit boiling wort, their alpha acids slowly isomerize into bitterness — the share that converts is called utilization. A 60-minute boil gets utilization up around 25%, while a 5-minute addition stays under 5%, meaning you'd need far more hops to hit the same IBU. This calculator uses an approximation that reflects that curve.

Actual IBU still depends on wort gravity, hop form, and trub loss, so lab-measured results can differ. If you're planning multiple additions — an early bittering charge and a late aroma addition — run each one through separately with its own boil time for a per-addition breakdown.
