How to Use the Homebrew Bottle Count Calculator
One of the easiest things to get caught out on after fermentation finishes is bottling prep. Run short on bottles and you're scrambling for more mid-bottling; run short on caps or corks and you can't seal the batch you worked hard on. This calculator takes your batch volume and the bottle size you're using, then calculates exactly how many bottles and closures you'll need, buffer included.
The calculation automatically adds a 5% buffer to account for sediment (spent yeast) left behind in the fermenter and small losses during transfer. For example, a 5-gallon batch often yields closer to 4.75 gallons once it's actually in the bottle, so if you prepare fewer bottles than the calculated number, you can easily end up one or two short at the end.
Closure type depends on bottle size. 750mL wine bottles traditionally use corks and a corker, while 12 oz and 16 oz beer bottles need crown caps and a capper. Once you select a bottle size, the recommended closure type is shown alongside the result.
