After a few trades in the middlegame it gets hard to keep the material count straight in your head. Enter how many pawns, knights, bishops, rooks and queens each side still has and this page shows both material totals, the gap between them and which side is ahead, with a per-piece breakdown underneath. A blank box counts as zero, so captured pieces can simply be left empty.

The values used are pawn 1, knight 3, bishop 3, rook 5 and queen 9. That is a widely used convention rather than an official standard, and the king is left unvalued. Nothing positional is baked into those numbers: the bishop pair, pawn structure and piece activity all sit outside them. Promotion is allowed for, so a side may hold up to 8 pawns and up to 15 pieces once the king is excluded.

The page does not assess the position, does not suggest a move and does not touch rating change. A material total is where a trade decision starts, not where it ends, and the real advantage is settled on the board. Current as of October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these values an official standard?

No. Pawn 1, knight and bishop 3, rook 5 and queen 9 is a widely used convention, and books and engines sometimes work with slightly different numbers.

Why is there no box for the king?

The game ends if the king falls, so the convention leaves it unvalued. That is why no input box is offered for it.

Can I enter two queens?

Yes. A promoted pawn can give a side several of the same piece, so up to 8 pawns and up to 15 pieces excluding the king are accepted.
