To cut weight you first have to see where it sits

Base weight is pack weight less everything you eat, drink or burn and everything you wear, and it is the figure backpackers work from when trimming a load. Consumables shrink as you walk while base gear is carried the whole way. This page lets you type items and weights in ounces as they are (results show pounds with kilograms in parentheses), totals base and consumables separately, and lays out what share of the pack each item takes in one table. It becomes visible which line would make the biggest difference if you cut it.

How the totals are formed

Every weight in the base list is summed into base weight, the consumable list is summed into consumable weight, and the two together make total pack weight. Shares use total pack weight as the denominator and are shown to one decimal place. Worn weight is not carried in the pack, so it is left out of the pack total and added only on the combined line; leave it blank and that line says so.

What this page does not do

It gives no recommended weight based on body mass and passes no verdict on a load. The weight class shown is only the common community banding (ultralight under 10 lb, lightweight 10 to 20 lb, traditional over 20 lb); no official limit exists, and the same weight is a different proposition over a different distance and terrain. This page is arithmetic on the weights you entered, and it does not cover pack volume or packing order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What belongs in the consumables list?

Anything that shrinks as you walk, which means food, water and fuel. Gear carried the whole way belongs in the base list.

What base weight should I aim for?

No official limit exists, so this page suggests no target. Backpackers commonly call a base weight under 10 lb (4.54 kg) ultralight, 10 to 20 lb (4.54 to 9.07 kg) lightweight and over 20 lb (9.07 kg) traditional, and the page shows which band you fall in, but these are community conventions rather than rules. Reading the per-item shares and deciding for yourself where to trim is the better approach.

Why is worn weight left out of the pack total?

Clothing and boots you have on are not carried in the pack. They are added only on the combined line, and leaving the field blank is noted there.
