How to Use the Tournament Bracket Generator
Planning a community or office game tournament is much easier when you know the bracket size ahead of time. Enter your number of teams (or players) and bracket type, and this calculator instantly shows total rounds, matches, and byes.
Single elimination means one loss and you're out — the number of rounds is log₂ of your headcount rounded up to the next power of two, and total matches equal your headcount minus one. Double elimination gives you a second chance in the losers bracket after a first loss, adding more matches but producing a fairer final ranking.
If your headcount isn't a power of two like 4, 8, 16, or 32, the leftover slots become byes that automatically skip round 1. For example, with 12 teams in a 16-slot bracket, 4 teams get a bye straight into the quarterfinals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Brackets need entrant counts rounded up to a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32...). If your headcount falls between those numbers, the extra slots become byes that automatically advance past round 1.
In single elimination, one loss ends your run. In double elimination, a first loss drops you to the losers bracket for another chance, which means more matches but a fairer path to determining the champion.
