How to use the tennis serve speed converter
Enter the number your radar gun or court app showed, pick the unit it was measured in, and the tool prints mph, km/h and m/s on separate rows. Add a travel distance and it shows how long the ball needs to cover that distance at the entered speed; leave it blank and the time row reads not entered.
The conversions use 1 mile as 1,609.344 m, 1 ft as 0.3048 m and 1 m/s as 3.6 km/h. Travel time is distance divided by speed, a constant-speed calculation. No court dimensions are assumed, so measure from the contact point to where the ball lands and enter that figure for the number to mean anything (checked October 2026).
No serve speed level table is included. Published sources do not agree on amateur or junior bands and no authoritative standard exists, and a table that merely looks plausible would become a false benchmark. The travel time also leaves out the speed lost to air drag, along with spin and the bounce, so the real time a returner experiences is longer.
Frequently asked questions
No. No authoritative table of serve speed levels for amateur players is published, so this page only converts units and computes travel time.
No. It assumes the entered speed holds all the way and divides distance by speed, so air drag, spin and the bounce are not included.
Measure from the contact point to where the ball lands and enter that. The page assumes no court dimensions and uses only the distance you type.
