Muscle fibers damaged during training rebuild — and grow stronger — while you rest, and how long that takes depends heavily on the size of the muscle group and the intensity of your workout. Large muscle groups like the legs or back have more total fiber, so more tissue gets damaged and recovery takes longer. Smaller groups like the arms or core tend to bounce back faster. This calculator uses the muscle group and intensity you trained to estimate recovery time and your next available training date.
As a general baseline: chest and back take about 48 hours, legs (the largest muscle mass) take around 72 hours, shoulders about 36 hours, and arms or core about 24 hours. Higher intensity causes more damage, so the calculator extends recovery time accordingly.
Re-stimulating the same muscle before it's fully recovered tends to pile up damage instead of building muscle, raising the risk of strength loss and injury. Using a split routine — training different muscle groups on different days — lets you keep training frequently while giving each group enough time to recover.
