How the Dependent Tax Credit Savings Calculator Works
Korea's income-tax system still uses a classic per-dependent deduction: each qualifying dependent lowers your taxable income by a fixed amount, and the actual dollar savings depends on your tax bracket. The U.S. used to work the same way, but the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the personal exemption entirely and replaced it with two flat, income-based tax credits instead: the Child Tax Credit and the Credit for Other Dependents.
The difference matters. A deduction only saves you your marginal tax rate times the deduction amount โ a 22% filer saves 22 cents per dollar deducted. A credit, by contrast, comes straight off your tax bill dollar-for-dollar, regardless of your bracket. The Child Tax Credit is worth up to $2,000 for each qualifying child under 17, and the Credit for Other Dependents is worth $500 for dependents who don't qualify for the child credit โ a 17-year-old, a college-age child, or an elderly parent you support, for example.
This calculator simply multiplies your number of qualifying children and other dependents by these flat credit amounts. Keep in mind both credits phase out at higher incomes: starting at $200,000 for single filers and $400,000 for married couples filing jointly, the credit shrinks by $50 for every $1,000 of income above the threshold. If your household income is near or above those levels, your actual credit may be smaller than this estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the old per-dependent personal exemption (previously about $4,050 per person, working like Korea's system). It was replaced with the Child Tax Credit and the Credit for Other Dependents, which subtract a fixed dollar amount directly from your tax bill instead of reducing taxable income.
