How to use the reach match safety mix counter

With a fixed number of application slots it is easy to lose track of how the list is balanced and end up with everything bunched at one end. List each college with the admission chance you assign it, set the thresholds you use for a safety and for a reach, and this page sorts every entry into one of three bands, counts the slots in each, and shows how many slots are still free.

The rule is straightforward. A chance at or above the safety threshold is a safety, a chance at or below the reach threshold is a reach, and anything in between is a match. A value exactly equal to a threshold is included in that band, and the thresholds you used are printed with the result. Entries are sorted from the highest chance down, and listing more colleges than you have slots stops the calculation with a message.

The admission chances are numbers you assign; this page neither computes nor predicts them. It also does not rank which mix is best. Change how you rate a college and its band changes with it, so read the output as a tally that makes your own balance visible rather than as advice about where to apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this page work out my admission chances?

No. The chances are values you assign. Applicant pools, seat counts and each college’s own criteria shift every year, so no chance is computed or predicted here.

Where does a chance exactly equal to a threshold go?

Into that band. With a 70% safety threshold, a 70% chance is a safety; with a 40% reach threshold, exactly 40% is counted as a reach.

Will it tell me which mix is best?

No. It only counts how many slots fall into each band from the values you entered, and it draws no conclusion about an optimal mix.
