How to use the written answer partial credit calculator
A written or free-response answer rarely scores all or nothing. The rubric lists several items, each worth a different number of points, and many of them are credited in part. When the paper comes back, working out where the points went means matching your answer against the rubric item by item. Enter each item with its points and the share you earned, and this page reports the partial credit per item, the totals and the item that cost you the most.
Each item is scored as points × credit ÷ 100 and the results are added up for the raw total. Because real grading usually moves in half points or whole points, the page also rounds each item to the step you enter and sums those figures separately. The share of the question earned divides the unrounded raw total by the question total, and points lost is the rubric total minus the raw total. If the rubric points do not add up to the question total, the gap is shown.
The limits are worth stating. This page does not read your answer or decide how much credit it deserves. The credit figures are yours, taken from the rubric, and in real grading two readers can score the same answer differently. Rubric wording, point splits and rounding steps differ from course to course, so copy the numbers from the sheet you were given. Nothing here produces a course grade; it handles the partial credit on a single question.
Frequently Asked Questions
You set it yourself by reading the rubric against your own answer: 100 when the item is fully met, 50 when only half of it is there, 0 when it is missing. The page does not read your answer or judge the credit for you.
Real grading often moves in half points or whole points. Each item is rounded to the step you enter and then added up, which is reported next to the unrounded total, so a small gap between the two figures is expected.
Yes, the page still calculates. When the two differ it shows the gap, since that usually means a line was copied incorrectly. The share earned always divides by the question total you entered.
