Add the sections up, then read the published bands

Many language certifications award a level from the total of several section scores. The minimum total for each level is not a permanent figure, though: bodies revise the bands and publish the current ones in the notice for each sitting. This page therefore stores no bands of its own. Copy the section scores from your report one line at a time, give the maximum total for the exam and the bands from the notice, and the page reports the sum, the percentage of the maximum and the level that total reaches. Name a target level and it also shows the points still needed.

How the check works

The section scores are added into a total, and a sum above the stated maximum is treated as an input error rather than a result. The bands are sorted from the highest minimum down and the first one the total clears becomes your level, with a total sitting exactly on a minimum counted for that band. The page reports the points to the next band up and to your target separately, and the table marks each band as your level, cleared but lower, or not reached.

What this page does not do

It cannot tell you which year of bands applies, and it refuses to judge when two bands share the same minimum. It does not check section minimums and it does not forecast a future sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why enter the level bands myself?

Certification bodies revise their band minimums, and the current figures appear in the notice for each sitting. A page holding one year of bands would report the wrong level after a revision, so this one reads the bands you copy from the notice in front of you.

Does a total exactly on a band minimum count for that level?

Yes. Minimums are read as "this total or above", so a total sitting on one belongs to that band, and a target level you have already reached shows 0 points remaining.

Why enter section scores instead of one total?

Because the level is decided on the sum of the sections, and score reports list them separately. Copying them line by line removes the chance of adding them up wrongly, and the page stops you if the sum comes out above the stated maximum.
