DELF and DALF set two conditions at once
DELF A1 through DALF C1 mark four sections, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written production and spoken production, out of 25 points each for a total of 100 (DALF C2 uses two papers instead, see below). Passing takes two things at the same time: 50 points or more overall, and at least 5 points in every one of the four sections. That is why a comfortable total can still fail when one section drops under 5. Enter the section scores (two paper scores for DALF C2) and this page checks the two conditions separately so you can see which one decided the outcome.
How the check works
The four section scores are added into a total and compared with 50. Each section is then compared with the 5-point minimum and the names of any sections below it are collected. Both conditions met is a pass; either one failing is not a pass, and the reason is reported as a total shortfall, a section shortfall, or both at once. A score sitting exactly on a threshold counts as met.
What this page does not do
It does not recommend which exam to sit and it does not convert your points into another test scale or a framework band. DALF C2 is the exception: it is sat as two papers, oral comprehension and production (50 points) and written comprehension and production (50 points), and needs 10 points in each paper plus 50 overall. Choosing C2 switches the score boxes and the rule automatically. The pass rules shown are as of September 2026, so read the current exam regulations alongside them.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. You need 50 of the 100 points overall and at least 5 of the 25 points in each of the four sections. A total of exactly 50 still fails if one section scored 4, so this page splits the reason into a total shortfall and a section shortfall.
Yes. DELF A1 through DALF C1 mark four sections out of 25 with a 5-point minimum each, but DALF C2 has two papers, oral comprehension and production (50) and written comprehension and production (50), with a 10-point minimum per paper. The 50-of-100 overall threshold is the same. Choosing C2 switches the page to two score boxes.
No. The rule is 5 points or above, so an exact 5 is treated as met. Anything lower, such as 4.5, marks that section as below the minimum and the whole exam fails regardless of the total.
