Enter the bands the school actually publishes

Colleges turn language test scores into bands in their own way. The same score can land in the second band at one school and the third at another, and the points attached to each band differ from one set of requirements to the next. This page therefore stores no school rule at all. You give the test name and your score, copy the published table into three fields per line, band name, minimum score and points awarded, and the page works out which band your score falls into and what it is worth.

How the check works

The bands are sorted from the highest minimum down, and the first one your score clears becomes your band. A score sitting exactly on a minimum belongs to that band. The page then reports how far you are from the next band up and from the top band, and the table marks each row as your band, cleared but lower, or not reached. If your score is under every band it says so and shows the gap to the lowest one.

What this page does not do

It cannot tell you which bands a given school uses, and it refuses to judge when two bands share the same minimum score. It does not estimate admission chances and it does not convert between test scales. Always take the bands from the current published requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to type the bands in myself?

Schools set their own bands, and the same institution can use different ones for different programs. Storing one school rule would give everybody else a wrong answer, so the page reads the bands you copy from the published requirements.

Does a score exactly on a band minimum count for that band?

Yes. Bands are normally written as "this score or above", so a score sitting on the minimum goes into that band, and a score on the top band minimum shows 0 points left to the top.

What happens if my score is under the lowest band?

The band is reported as not reached and no points are awarded. The page still shows how many points you would need to enter the lowest band, which is useful when planning a retake.
