Hand folds over as coordinates
Folding instructions travel better as positions than as panel widths. How far from the left trim edge, whether that crease is a mountain or a valley, and how far the number shifts once bleed is added: that is the whole instruction. On heavy stock a score line goes on the same coordinate.
How it is calculated
An accordion fold divides the flat width by the panel count and accumulates the coordinates. A roll fold keeps the two outer panels at one width, subtracts the reduction cumulatively from each tucked panel, and accumulates those widths instead. Direction assumes the printed side facing up: accordion alternates, roll runs one way. Current as of October 2026.
Limits and disclaimer
Panel widths are out of scope; only coordinates and direction are returned. Score channel width and depth, folder tolerance by machine and grain direction are not modeled. Cross folds and gate folds are not supported, so confirm against a folding dummy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Counting from the left with the printed side facing up. An accordion fold alternates direction, while a roll fold takes every crease in the same direction.
Heavy stock has to be scored before folding or the folded edge cracks. Score lines sit on the same coordinates as the folds, so the count matches the number of folds.
No. This returns fold coordinates and direction only. Working out individual panel widths is outside its scope.
